New cold planers in 300 and 600 HP classes

in Road Planers, Bomag on 16 September 2009

Two new series of cold planers have been introduced by Bomag, in the 600 and 300 HP classes, to offer contractors highest levels of manoeuvrability, operational stability and milling finish.

The 600 HP class
The first model in the new 600 HP class, the BM 2000/60, has a working width of 2m. A stand-out feature is what is claimed to be the first vibration-insulated operator's platform on the European market. Bomag engineers worked on the principle that if you can systematically generate vibration, you can also eliminate it in the same way. So instead of using a uniformly welded frame, its engineers separated the operator's station from the machine and mounted the platform itself on vibration dampers to eliminate vibrations. The new exhaust control reduces noise emissions and also adds to the comfort of the operator.

With conventional planers, the driver needs to stand just outside the cab to get a clear view of the milled edge below the machine, and in so doing, is subjected to sun, rain, dust and dirt. The BM 2000/60, however, has a wide protective roof that can be moved sideways together with the front windscreen. The driver now works under cover but still has a clear view of the milled edge. At the same time the planer now has more clearance on the opposite side from trees or other obstructions.

Further operator comfort and convenience is offered at the ground station, which has a large lockable storage space with lighter doors. The compartment is easy to access from the ground but also provides theft-proof storage for cutters, tools and protective clothing. The operator needs only a single central key for the whole machine.

Transportability has also been improved. Cold planers usually have a very high transport height. As well as having a folding roof for easier transport, Bomag cold planers in the 500 and 600 HP class are all fitted as standard with a hydraulic, automatic folding conveyor belt. The contractor no longer has to provide specialist transport when the planer needs moving.

The water reserve is 10 percent larger than on earlier models, at 3,500 litres. The water is held in two tanks, one with a capacity of 1,000 litres, located at the rear. The machine works for longer without needing to re-tank and is also better ballasted. The rear tracks suffer less slippage and therefore lower wear and the planer produces a more even milled finish.

New hydraulic side plates on the milling box also provide continuous and accurate grading. Material accumulation no longer causes a float effect as it is dispersed by temporary pressure on the side plates. Consequently, grading is maintained according to the preset specification.

The 300 HP class
There are three models in the new 300 HP class, with working widths of 1m, 1.2m and 1.3m., These machines are designed for small andr medium-sized jobs where speed and manoeuvrability are required.

This class has a centrally mounted rotor; all four tracks remain fully steerable with this central arrangement. Supports have been extended to give good ground clearance even at milling depths of up to 32cm. The chain drive assemblies have also been redesigned.

The working concept and operating panel are the same as on the larger 600 HP series, including lighter doors, new hinges and a single central key for convenience. Working time on site has been lengthened by increasing the water tank capacity by 25 percent to 1,250 litres.

A new seal has also been added between the conveyor belts - as on the 600 class - which reduces dust levels and improves safety conditions for the operator. Hydraulic side plates are also available for smooth grading.
