The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) has published a Best Practice Guide to the Maintenance, Inspection and Thorough Examination of Mobile Cranes.
According to the CPA's Tim Watson this is the first time such detailed information covering maintenance, inspection and thorough examination of mobile cranes has been pulled together in one document. He said it follows the same principals used in the tower cranes best practice "because LOLER applies to all lifting equipment."
The document is split into 22 sections covering topics from legal requirements and the approach to maintenance, to practical issues on site and the management of thorough examination records. A further 40 pages of annexes expand on issues such as work at height and the qualification and assessment of maintenance personnel as well as including sample documents and typical maintenance schedules.
Phillip White, chief Inspector of construction for the Health and Safety Executive, has written the foreword for the Guide which will be distributed to HSE inspectors. Copies can be downloaded free of charge from the CPA website.
