Congestion charge alert through iPhone

in IT, Transport on 30 July 2009

If you have an iPhone, you can download an application from iTunes that lets you know when you have entered the London congestion charging zone and so helps you avoid fines for inadvertent non-payment of the charge.

The system comes from AutoAlert, provider of GPS Vehicle Tracking Systems.

According to AutoAlert commercial director Asheet Advani, £36m was collected from 400,000 motorists in the first five months of 2009 alone. He says: "By utilising the power of the iPhone and AutoAlert, we can reduce the penalties for people who simply didn't know that they were in the London Congestion Charging Zone, or just forgot topay."

The AutoAlert iPhone Congestion Charge application works by sending its location to the AutoAlert system. This then confirms whether the iPhone is in the London Congestion Charging Zone and replies back with confirmation. Clicking the Pay Button in the application generates a text message payment or connects you to the Congestion Charging Call Centre. If no payment is attempted, AutoAlert will send a text message reminder to your phone at a time of your choosing.

The application is available through the iTunes store for less than £5. The reminder service, along with additional reports, maps and features is also available for just £5 per month on a pay as you go basis. For those without an iPhone, the system can also be accessed using an AutoAlert GPS Vehicle Tracking device.
